AFTERLIFE GEOGRAPHIES | DRUMMER’S GROVE | SEKHET HETEPU
SEKHET- HETEPU is a work in the Afterlife Geographies series. The piece focuses on Drummers Grove in Prospect Park Brooklyn.
“After having journeyed successfully through the underworld, Ani finally arrives at the kingdom of Osiris where he will spend his afterlife in the Sekhet Hetepu, "Fields of Peace" or the Elysian Fields of the Egyptians. First, Thoth introduces Ani and his Shade into the presence of a triad of gods. The four divisions, each surrounded by water, are known as the "Islands of the Blest". Ani is shown working in this agricultural idyll, reaping in the second division and ploughing in the third. This is the abode of the departed Souls who "reap splendid Corn".
From the Book of the Dead, Papyrus of Ani.

AFTERLIFE GEOGRAPHIES
In so far as the afterlife is accessed through the imagination, the afterlife situates what a future world might entail, and rearranges the pieces of the world, as we knew it, into a vision of the future. Afterlife Geographies considers sacred sites, sites of restoration, sites of reclamation, and sites of liberation. The project charts language, movement, thought, speech, and action to develop structures that archive histories of community building. Afterlife Geographies documents “way-of-life” practices, in relation to processes of settlement, by which communities articulate world view, synthesize experience, and establish infrastructures of empowerment and remembrance.
